Florida Fungi Farm Chronicles: Vol 2

Florida Fungi Farm Chronicles: Vol 2

Ivan Herenchak-Jones

Our second chronicle begins with a slightly different tone than the first. While we inch ever closer to being in full swing in all aspects of the business, we are clearing some additional hurdles that we could not have anticipated.

Our sterilizer, which is the backbone of any mushroom cultivation operation, had to be replaced due to a warranty issue. This left us without any way to produce new mushroom media for two weeks while the compromised unit was freighted across the country to California before they could ship out a replacement.

While it is a hiccup in the grand scheme of things it certainly pushed our launch timeline back. It  has served to remind us here at the farm of a fact of life: “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.”

This Robert Burns quote from his 1785 poem “To a Mouse” was the inspiration for the legendary John Steinbeck novel “Of Mice and Men,” and it is the inspiration we have been using to fire our drive to surmount this obstacle. Despite all our careful planning and the hours spent coordinating each component of an urban fungi farm collective, we were waylaid right before launch!

Instead of getting down and wearing a frown we decided to make the most of all the extra time we had. We’ve spent some of the time enhancing our web presence by engaging with some of you on social media as well as polishing our online shop. We’ve also put some of that time into researching some aspects of mycology and cultivation that will allow us to serve our customers with better products. All in all, it was not time wasted!

Now, dear reader, you may have noticed the tone of this chronicle has lightened up as you read further. Well, that is because we recently received our replacement sterilizer and have been running it at full capacity now for several days and we are super happy to be back on track!

Playing catch up is no easy task but we have been up with the sun putting in the hard work so that we can share the bounty of our fungi with you all. We are incredibly thankful for all of the positive communication we have been receiving recently and our hopes are high for a spectacular launch very soon.

So, while it is true that “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry,” we here at Florida Fungi Farm are keeping our chins up. Like Chumbawumba said: “I get knocked down, but I get up again. You’re never gonna keep me down.”

See y’all soon!
